Twitter Increases Character limit from 140 to 280 Characters

November 8th, 2017

Twitter came to the decision to double the number of characters its users could publish in a single tweet from 140 to 280 characters and many brands are running with it.

According to a blog post written by Twitter's Aliza Rosen "Historically, 9% of Tweets in English hit the character limit." Which "reflects the challenge of fitting a thought into a Tweet, often resulting in lots of time spent editing and even at times abandoning Tweets before sending. With the expanded character count, this problem was massively reduced – that number dropped to only 1% of Tweets running up against the limit."

Aliza goes on to state that "In addition to more Tweeting, people who had more room to Tweet received more engagement (Likes, Retweets, @mentions), got more followers, and spent more time on Twitter. This resulted in users feeling "more satisfied with how they expressed themselves on Twitter, their ability to find good content, and Twitter overall."

Since Twitter rolled out the 280 character to all users on Tuesday, November 8th, brands big and small have gotten quite creative with the added space. Below are some examples of brands getting creative with the 280 character count:

Pittsburgh Steelers

Ohio State

 Garfield

 Twin Peaks

Law & Order SVU

Krispy Kreme

Neew York Yankees
